THE already illustrious boxing career of four-division world champion Donnie Nietes is about to get an exciting extension as he signed with MTK Global and D4G Promotions after he became free-agent with the closure of the Cebu-based ALA Boxing stable.

The MTK Global, a boxing and MMA promotion with presence in 18 locations worldwide, has officially announced the signing of the Murcia, Negros Oriental-native on Saturday (Manila Time), making him the second Filipino boxer to join the MTK Global roster.

Nietes’ former ALA Boxing Gym teammate, Albert Pagara, was the first to sign with MTK Global and D4G Promotions just last month.

The longest Filipino world champion Nietes (42-1-5, 23KOs) earlier told The Manila Times in an interview about two weeks ago that he has made a deal with a new promoter but asked to just let MTK Global do the announcement.

One of the things Nietes considered before agreeing with the terms is a word from the stable that he will get a chance to fight either Srisaket Rungvisai, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez or Juan Francisco Estrada.

“I’m happy with what I’ve achieved so far. The journey has been wonderful and I will forever and I will cherish how I worked hard in building my successful career. I’m not done yet and I am now hoping to get a fight with Estrada, Rungvisai and Chocolatito,” he said.

At 38, Nietes does not have the luxury of time and he wants that dream fight to happen soon. He said he’s promised with a tune-up fight in December or January next year before the negotiation for his dream fight gets going.

In an official statement from MTK Global, chief strategy officer Paul Gibson said that he’s delighted to again team up with D4G Promotions to work alongside boxing legend Donnie Nietes.

“He’s already had tremendous success in his career having won world titles in four-weight classes, and we’re confident of securing some huge fights for him in the always-entertaining super-flyweight division,” Gibson said of Nietes.

Nietes will join Tyson Fury, Hekkie Budler, Charlie Edwards, Carl Frampton, Jamel Herring, among others in the MTK Global roster.

Nietes hasn’t fought since he won over Kazuto Ioka for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight title in December 2018. He vacated the crown in 2019 to pursue potential fights against Rungvisai, Gonzalez or Estrada.

He did not get the chance to fight any of those three fighters. He’s hoping it will happen this time with MTK Global and D4G Promotions.
