Mayor Vico Sotto made the announcement Tuesday after President Duterte said in his address late Monday night that he is not in favor of the opening of classes amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Ano man ang mangyari, hindi natin puwedeng hayaan na mahuli ang mga mag-aaral natin sa mga pampublikong paaralan (Whatever happens, we cannot let our students in public schools to be left out),” Sotto said.

Attached in his post was a quote from President Duterte during his late night address, saying: “It’s useless to be talking about the opening of classes. Para sa akin, bakuna muna (For me vaccine first).”

The Department of Education (DepEd) had earlier announced that classes for School Year 2020-2021 will resume on August 24 as approved by the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF) on May 11.

Sotto said they are now working with DepEd on alternative learning for students.

He said the city is currently looking for available funds to procure personal learning devices for students once classes push through either physically or virtually.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones had earlier said that the opening of classes does not necessarily mean that students have to physically report to school as some classes may be held virtually.

In case classes will be held online, Sotto said they will improve the Internet connection in the barangay level to allow students to download modules.

“The DepEd is doing module-development now but we will also assist as needed,” he said.

Classes have been suspended since March 10 due to the threat of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
