Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Executive Director Sonny Barrios said the SBP is contemplating what to do with Gilas Pilipinas after the national team’s disastrous campaign in the ongoing 2019 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) World Cup in Foshan, China.
“When I say ‘disbandment,’ it is in the sense that there’s nothing that they are preparing for,” Barrios told The Manila Times in a phone interview on Tuesday. “So in the meantime, they will go back to their respective ball clubs.”
A number of Gilas players are loaned from various teams in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) whose Season 44 is now ongoing.
“Wala namang ensayo kaya ko nagamit ‘yung term na ‘disbandment’ (The team is not training for anything yet that’s why I used the term ‘disbandment’),” added the former PBA commissioner.
Barrios did not say anything on what awaits the national team program, under coach Yeng Guiao after emerging winless in five games in the World Cup.
He said the SBP will conduct a series of meetings to discuss the future of the Philippine team.
Gilas suffered stinging defeats to Italy (62-108), Serbia (67-126) and Angola (81-84) in the Group D preliminary round. In the classification phase, the Philippines lost to Tunisia (67-86) and Iran (75-95) to finish last at No. 32.
The rest of the team including naturalized player Andray Blatche arrived on Tuesday morning.
