Returning import Charles Rhodes promised to win back the Commissioner’s Cup title for San Miguel Beer when the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) import-laden conference begins May 19.
Rhodes, who arrived last week from South Korea, said he didn’t return to the PBA for money but to help the Beermen win back-to-back titles.
“That is what expected. You should expect nothing less. I don’t come over here just to make money and play. I come over here to win a championship and be the best player in this conference. I make sure it will come true,” Rhodes told The Manila Times.
Rhodes averaged 27.3 points and 10.1 rebounds in the 2017 Commissioner’s Cup when the Beermen emerged as champions. San Miguel Beer, reinforced by Renaldo Balkman in last year’s Commissioner’s Cup, was dethroned by defending champion Barangay Ginebra San Miguel.
“It feels good to be back. I just try to do better than what I did last year because I know it is going to be harder for me since all the teams know my style of play but that is a challenge and I’m prepared for that. I’m just working hard if I can just dominate this conference,” Rhodes added.
Rhodes, 33, said he’s excited to team up again with five-time Most Valuable Player June Mar Fajardo as well as Terrence Romeo, Kelly Nabong, Paul Zamar and Christian Standhardinger.
“June Mar is the player and best teammate off the court. I’m happy to be back with him. We will try to dominate — what we did the last time we played together,” he said.
“Just by conversation, I know they are great players and great human beings. Romeo is a great passing point guard and he’ll throw me a lot of alley-hoop this conference. I’m just ready to get started.”
