Northport faces Meralco in its final game in the elimination round at 7 p.m. tonight in Season 44 Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
The Batang Pier (8-2 win-loss record) have already secured the No. 2 spot and the last twice-to-beat bonus in the quarterfinal round. Leading team TNT KaTropa (9-1) bagged the other twice-to-beat bonus.
“We’re just ready to play the game and look forward to the playoff round. We’ll just play and win this game,” said Northport coach Pido Jarencio.
“Sean Anthony and Sol Mercado might not play but Paolo Taha is ready to suit up,” added Jarencio.
Kevin Ferrer is averaging 20.6 points in three games since moving to Northport from Ginebra via trade last June 19.
Import Prince Ibeh is delivering for the Batang Pier averaging 13.6 points, 15.9 rebounds and 3.5 blocks in the last 10 games.
Meralco (3-6) is hoping to halt a four-game losing streak to keep its playoff bid alive.
New import Delroy James, who debuted with 35 points in Meralco’s 88-99 loss to Magnolia on Saturday, will try to save the day for the Bolts.
Meanwhile, Phoenix Pulse (4-6) faces the already-eliminated Northern Luzon Expressway (2-8) in the 4:30 p.m. first game.
The Fuel Masters and Alaska, with similar records, are lurking at the eighth to the ninth spots.
“We will try our best to win our last game [in the elimination] against NLEX to secure at least the eighth spot in the quarterfinals,” said Phoenix coach Louie Alas.
Phoenix lost to San Miguel Beer 108-128 on Wednesday.
Import Richard Howell and Matthew Wright are expected to step up for the Fuel Masters in the crucial game.
