University of Perpetual Help System DALTA rallied back from two sets down to score a stunning win over defending three-time champion Arellano University, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 16-14, in the NCAA Season 95 volleyball Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.
Jhona Rosal led a balanced attack for the Lady Altas with 15 points, while Jenny Gaviola and Dana Persa contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively for Perpetual Help, which improved its record to 5-1 to tie its victim Arellano – a team that triumphed in its first five games.
Arellano’s setback gave College of St. Benilde the solo lead with its 5-0 card.
Perpetual Help tightened its defense with solid blocking after collecting 12 blocks, including seven by Gaviola. The Lady Altas also committed less errors with 30 as compared to 48 by the Lady Chiefs.
“Sa blocking talaga kami nag-concentrate, after namin matalo ng first two sets, talagang yun ang sinabi ko na mag-focus ang mga players,” said Perpetual Help coach Macky Carino.
“Of course malaking panalo, malaking moral booster para sa amin, sino ba naman ang ayaw na manalo against a defending champion. Malaking bagay kasi konti na lang semifinals na, hopefully makakuha naman kami ng twice-to-beat incentive,” added Carino.
Regine Arocha led Arellano with 23 points, while Princess Bello had 16 points. Necole Ebuen was held to just six points.
The Las Piñas-based squad had a double victory after the three-peat seeking men’s team Altas remained undefeated in six matches following a 28-26, 23-25, 25-21, 25-19 romp of Arellano.
Arellano, however, averted a sweep after the Braves took the solo lead with a 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10 win over titleholder Altaletws to raise their record to 6-0.
