In an interview with CNN Philippines, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said employers are appealing for a six-month extension as the business climate is still not good.

“They are appealing, the management group, employers group, to possibly give them another six months extension because they said the business climate is still not good,” he said.

“The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) is studying it if we will allow to extend the period of six months to another six months,” Bello added.

The labor chief explained that under the law, if a person is temporarily terminated, the individual should be rehired after six months.

“Now, if they cannot rehire you after six months they have to pay you your separation pay,” said Bello.

He said they will come out with the decision on the matter this week.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw the imposition of various levels of community quarantine which halted the operations of a high number of business establishments.
