A fire broke out in Sta. Cruz Parish Church in Manila on Good Friday night, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said.
According to Illoises Cornel, 24, he saw the fire started at the candle stand when he entered the church’s The Chapel of the Saints at around 5:45 p.m. on April 19.
The Bureau of Fire Protection said the fire gutted the left front portion of Sta. Cruz Parish Church along Bustos Street Plaza in Sta. Cruz, Manila.
The fire lasted for almost 20 minutes until it was fully controlled at 5:59 p.m., BFP said.
BFP Fire Inspector Michael Ignacio said the fire was immediately extinguished at 6:03 p.m.
No casualties or injuries have been reported and the series of structures inside the church are not damaged except for the candle stand, Ignacio said.
Santa Cruz Church or also known as the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament is one of the oldest churches in Manila.
The original structure of the church was twice damaged by earthquakes and then completely destroyed during the Battle of Manila. It was rebuilt in 1957.
