“To be a diocesan shrine, a church must be a place of historic significance, prayer and pilgrimage for a special reason of piety,” according to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

The CBCP gave its approval to elevate the cathedral to a shrine.

Built mainly of stone and bricks in the 1820s, the church has been a renowned landmark for pilgrims from different provinces.

The rite of declaration into a Shrine will be held on Dec. 3 and would be presided by Bishop Reynaldo Evangelista of the Diocese of the Imus on the 8th anniversary of the canonical coronation of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Pillar, patroness of the Imus diocese.
