LEGASPI CITY, Albay: A former radioman in Sorsogon who had moved to Balangibog News FB Online portal was shot dead shortly after he posted a statement about a quarry operation.
Jobert Bercasio, an ex-reporter of radio DZMS, was gunned down at about 7:55 p.m. on Monday near XTRM Seabreeze Homes Subdivision, Barangay Cabid-an, Sorsogon City, based on a police report.
Bercasio, 39, is a resident of Purok 3, Sitio Dancalan, Barangay Buenavista, Bacon District, Sorsogon City.
The report said he was onboard a scooter from Sorsogon proper when he was waylaid by two motorcycle-riding suspects who shot him four times, hitting different parts of his body and killing him.
A month ago, “DJ Boodie” of Padaba FM in Bulan town, was also gunned down in front of his house.
Maria Luisa Calubaquid, Philippine National Police-Bicol regional spokesman, said they were investigating the incident.
In his personal Facebook page, Bercasio complained about trucks coming from a “quarry area” in Bulan town, which he said lacked proper documents.
He was described as a “hard-hitting” commentator who tackled quarry operation, among other issues, including alleged illegal logging in Sorsogon City.
If Bercasio’s killing is proven to be related to his work, he will be the 17th journalist killed in the line of duty under President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration and the 189th since 1986.
