TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan: A municipal councilor, formerly the Lasam town mayor; another councilor; and two others were killed in an ambush in Barangay Ignacio B. Jurado in Lasam around 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
The Lasam town police station identified the fatalities as Lasam Municipal Councilor Marjorie Apil Salazar, the former town mayor; Lasam town Councilor Eduardo Asuten; John Rey Cortes Apil, 24; and Aiza Salvador Manuel, 31.
The initial police investigation revealed that the victims were on board a white Toyota Hiace vehicle with plate No. YN 1266 when they were ambushed by still unidentified suspects.
Police said the van was approaching Ignacio B. Jurado village in Lasam when passengers of two vehicles ‒ a blue Hyundai Accent without registration plate and a white Toyota Wigo, heading west ‒ sprayed bullets at the vehicle of the victims.
Law officers added that witnesses saw the two vehicles used by the perpetrator heading south towards Centro, Lasam after the incident.
Maj. Pablo Tumbali of the Lasam police station said responding law enforcers brought the victims to the nearest hospital where they were declared dead.
Aside from empty ammunition shells, a pamphlet was found in the incident vicinity, marked with “Ben Danilo Command,” allegedly a group under the communist New People’s Army leadership, operating in the Cagayan Valley region.
