There’s no stopping local shows in reaching an international market as streaming giant Netflix adds more Filipino films in their portfolio. 

Netflix has announced that in June, five new Filipino movies will join its already long list of shows. The new roster is composed of various genres from drama and comedy to even horror. 

Here’s the award-winning lineup to watch out for.

Pinoy Sunday (June 5)

Starring Bayani Agbayani and Jeffrey QuizonPinoy Sunday is a comedy-drama that follows the story of two overseas Filipino workers in Taiwan. 

Sunod - AWARD-WINNING FILIPINO SHOWS ARE COMING TO NETFLIX

Sunod (June 14)

This 2019 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) horror film entry received good feedback from critics. Starring award-winning actors Carmina Villaroel, Mylene Dizon, and JC SantosSunod is the story of a mother looking for a cure for her sick daughter. To earn extra cash, she decides to work as a call center agent only to be haunted by a ghost. 

Lola Igna - AWARD-WINNING FILIPINO SHOWS ARE COMING TO NETFLIX

Lola Igna (June 18)

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Eduardo Roy Jr., Lola Igna is the story of an old woman eager to die. Starring veteran actress Angie Ferro and Yves Flores, this film was a hit in 2019’s Pista ng Pelikulang Pilipino, where it bagged numerous awards, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Musical Score, and Best Actress (for Angie Ferro). 

Untrue - AWARD-WINNING FILIPINO SHOWS ARE COMING TO NETFLIX

Untrue (June 22)

Following the story of a wife trying to break free from her abusive husband, Untrue is a drama-thriller featuring Cristine Reyes and Xian Lim. It was written and directed by Singrid Andrea Bernardo, the same brilliant mind behind the box-office hit Kita Kita

Pamilya Ordinaryo - AWARD-WINNING FILIPINO SHOWS ARE COMING TO NETFLIX

Of all the films included in the lineup, this one directly reflects the country’s current socio-cultural situation. Directed by Eduardo Roy Jr., this drama has been named Best Film at the 2016 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. Pamilya Ordinaryo is about teenage couple Aries and Jane Ordinaryo, who try to survive life as pickpockets. Their already hard situation takes a turn for the worse when their one-month-old child is kidnapped. This pushes the couple to resort to desperate measures. Playing the film’s lead roles are Ronwaldo Martin and Hasmine Kilip, who won Best Actress at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards and FAP Awards for her performance.
