MEDIA AS A BRIDGE: Because of the nature of our work, our inter-connectivity and wide network, media people are often besieged with requests from their readers or viewers.

Letters of appeal are usually written in aid of assistance (certainly not legislation) from some government official or agency, and in most cases, even from among TV programs, actors and actresses.

Media people are seen by their public as an effective conduit to the realization of their dreams or aspirations. How many times have I been approached to fulfill any or all of the following obligations: Get a visa, land a job, find a good doctor, raise funds for some school or church, locate a missing relative or lover?

KORINA SANCHEZ ROXAS - MOVIEGOER: Korina of perpetual help

Thank God, there are media persons who respond well to personal emergencies or aspirations.

One of them is Korina Sanchez-Roxas, whose long-running news magazine program, “Rated K,” recently helped realize two elderly women’s fondest desires.

Handa na ba kayo?

HOPE FROM ‘RATED K:’ Two women, a heroic teacher and a persevering grandmother, were honored by “Rated K” recently as the program helped fulfill their hearts’ desires.
Korina and her team surprised high school teacher Beth Sangalang with a performance from Erik Santos while aspiring songwriter Francisca Teje, or “Lola Fe” finally heard her song brought to life by Angeline Quinto.

“Rated K” learned about Beth through her former student

Arjay Velasco, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) who wanted to honor the teacher he considers his hero.

Arjay recalled that he almost quit his studies in high school due to family problems. To his surprise, his class adviser, Beth, insisted on supporting his schooling and took him in like her son.

She also offered to send him to college, but Arjay chose to work.

He eventually became an OFW in Dubai, but he never forgot how his favorite teacher supported him.

“Rated K” stepped up to help Arjay. He flew back from Dubai, and with the help of Korina and team, surprised Beth with not just a video greeting, but also a live performance by Erik Santos himself during a homecoming event at their high school.

LOLA HEARS HER SONG: Lola Fe, meanwhile, always dreamt of being a writer, but she knew she couldn’t pursue it as a career because of financial reasons.

She became a housemaid to support her family, but continued to write songs on the side. She refused to let go of her dream.

Now 72, Lola Fe wrote to “Rated K” in the hope of hearing her compositions performed.

The “Rated K” team heard her plea. They teamed up with Star Music’s Jonathan Manalo, who arranged and produced Lola Fe’s song “Maraming Salamat, Mahal,” which Angeline Quinto brought to life.

Angeline will release the song as a single, and its rights and proceeds will go to Lola Fe.

“I am an old woman, but I never let go of my dream. I’m so thankful for Korina and her team, who heard my request and brought me this much joy at this point in my life,” said Lola Fe.

“Rated K” is a news magazine program that features human-interest stories and no-holds barred interviews with interesting personalities.

The program airs Sundays, 8:45 pm after “Wansapanataym” on ABS-CBN.
