The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) committee has approved Sen. Bong Go’s proposal to have a second edition of the festival starting next year.
This is part of their goal to help the local movie industry arrest the declining viewership of Filipino films brought about by the influx of foreign films and the development and growth of affordable entertainment and media platforms.
Dubbed as the Metro Manila Summer Film Festival, the second edition of MMFF will be based on submitted finished films produced not earlier than Jan. 1, 2019 including those that were earlier submitted for the 2019 MMFF finished film competition.
The MMFF Selection Committee will choose eight official entries to be shown exclusively in Metro Manila and in all theaters nationwide for an eleven-day period from Black Saturday up to the second Tuesday after Black Saturday.
The Summer Film Festival will give also give local movie producers an additional 11 days to showcase Filipino films exclusively nationwide and will likewise give workers of the industry added opportunities to display their talents and creativity.
The project was presented to the Metro Manila Council and the Metro Manila Mayors, who have manifested their full support for the Metro Manila Summer Film Festival. The event will be in partnership with the Cinema Exhibitors Association of the Philippines (CEAP).
The Metro Manila Summer Film Festival will have its own Parade of Stars on April 5, 2020 and Awards Night on April 15, 2020. The showing of official entries in cinemas will be from April 11 to 21, 2020.
It was early July when Go, as one of the recently appointed members of the MMFF Executive Committee together with Laguna Congressman Danilo Fernandez, vowed to pursue laws that will support the movie industry.
