Aiming to highlight the ability of Filipinos to bounce back at a time when the world grapples with the prevailing health crisis, the Manila Bulletin picked “The Resilience of the Filipino” as the theme for this year’s MB Sketchfest.
For the first time since 2011, the popular on-the-spot drawing and sketching competition will also be held virtually amid the COVID-19 situation in the country.
“Amid pandemic and calamity, Filipinos stand strong and united in the spirit of Bayanihan: always determined to build back better. Let your courage and determination shine through your creative work,” Manila Bulletin Executive Vice President Sonny Coloma said.
From only around 200 participants when it started nine years ago, the event steadily grew through the years and has since become a national activity and the signature event of the Manila Bulletin.
This also continuously attracts students, art enthusiasts of all ages, and creative groups from all over the Philippines.
In 2019, the competition reached 2,531 participants.
Under the contest rules, creativity and originality make up 35 percent and 25 percent of the criteria, respectively. While 40 percent goes to the relevance of the outputs to the theme.
Aside from the on-the-spot and exhibition categories, it now includes a category for digital art.
The categories are: Kiddie (children 12 years old and below); Junior (13 to 18 years old); and Senior (19 years and older). Three winners from each category, from each of the nationwide legs in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will receive cash prizes.
Participants may pre-register online at sketchfest2020.mb.com.ph until Nov. 8.
On the event proper, participants are required to livestream themselves on Facebook while doing their artworks at least one to two minutes using their own account or their guardian’s account.
This will be posted with the caption “I am part of #MBSketchfest2020” and @manilabulletin should be tagged. Setting of the post should also be in public.
But the exhibition category for physical submission is already ongoing.
