Mark Bautista has a “lesson learned” note to self: Always check your email inbox.
The singer could have been “Aladdin” on Broadway if only he was able to read on time the casting invitation sent to him.
In an interview, Mark revealed he was given the opportunity to audition for the iconic Disney character on Jan. 8 but only found out about it last Jan. 10.
“Nanghina ako,” was how he described the feeling.
“Galing ako ng grocery nu’n eh, nag-open ako ng isang e-mail—I have two e-mail accounts—at may nag-message sa’kin na may sinend daw na kanta for me,” he narrated. “So habang nagscro-scroll ako, may nakita akong message something about Disney. The e-mail was sent to me on Jan. 7. And they also have that follow-up message asking if I’m still interested. Late na’ko nakareply so sayang.”
Playing Aladdin has always been a dream for Mark. The singer revealed he auditioned for the role in past years but didn’t get it.
Though disappointed, the 36-year-old chooses to put it all behind him, believing “it is not the perfect timing.”
“Kasi nga, hindi smooth lahat eh. So malalaman ko naman ‘yun pag okay kasi swabe lahat, sakto lahat sa schedule. Of course, nandu’n ‘yung sayang kasi nandyan na ‘yung opportunity eh, once-in-a-lifetime eh… although hindi rin naman sure na ako ‘yung makukuha but what if ‘di ba?” he said.
Many of his celebrity friends expressed support. They even suggested that Mark e-mail Disney back as soon as possible, thinking it might not be too late to get the opportunity to audition for the role.
“Manageable naman ‘yung feelings ko about it and I guess it’s not really meant for me. Yeah, things happen for a reason,” he simply said.
If anything, Mark finds solace in the fact that he was considered for it.
“’Yung idea na kinokontak nila ako for that, masaya ako du’n. Happy ako na nasa radar nila ako. Maybe there’s a bigger thing for me,” he said.
Mark turns his focus on his upcoming concert alongside Christian Bautista and Aicelle Santos. Dubbed “1 for 3,” it is on Feb. 1 at The Theatre at Solaire.
