K-pop boy band EXO member Chen is sorry over a letter he wrote last month announcing his marriage plans in which it was also hinted he’s going to be a father.
“After worrying a lot about how I should express my feelings, it’s taken me until now to write to you, EXO-L. I’m worried that my poor wording might hurt you. But I want to apologize to all of you who have been very surprised and taken aback by my sudden news and waited all this time,” Chen posted on the Lysn app on Feb. 19, SBS News reported.
He added, “When I first wrote that letter, I thought hard about how I should deliver it to you, as it was my first time experiencing such a thing. Still, I wrote the letter because I thought that I should personally tell you first. However, my unintentionally lacking and poor wording caused disappointment, and seeing you hurt broke my heart as well.”
His action became a hot topic on Twitter with the hashtag #ChenWeLoveYou and Jongdae (his real name) trending worldwide on Feb. 19.
On Jan. 13, Chen revealed he has “a girlfriend that I want to spend the rest of my life with. During that time, a blessing came to us. I was also surprised as I wasn’t able to take part in the plans that I had made with the members and the agency. However, this blessing gave me the strength and courage.”
The announcement was met with mixed feelings from fans. A number of Korean fans demanded that Chen be expelled from EXO and that they would no longer support him if he continued to be part of the boy band.
International and other Korean fans, on the other hand, signed a petition to show their support to Chen. The petition was closed with 137,170 signatures.
In his latest post, Chen added, “I don’t know if my feelings will be conveyed well, but please know what I’m sincerely grateful for the love you’ve given me, and I am who I am now because of that love. Let me apologize once again for expressing my apologies to you so late. I’ll make sure to continue to try my best. Thank you.”
