Miss International Philippines 2019 and lawyer Patch Magtanong took to social media on Monday to address law students struggling from mental health and depression.
Magtanong spoke about temporarily giving up law practice to become a beauty queen, pursuing passions, and mental health during her talk at the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Capiz Chapter Induction of Officers and New Members.
“As much as I want to inspire the youth to study hard and to prioritize their education, I hope to also inspire everyone to stop neglecting their mental health for the sake of school. Depression is so common, especially in law school. And yet no one talks about it,” Magtanong wrote in an Instagram post.
Magtanong, who learned of passing the bar while competing in the 2019 Binibining Pilipinas pageant, also described pain as “transcient” and “temporary thing”. “So many people suffer in silence, sometimes until it’s too late….. You get over the pain, you get over the challenges but you cannot take back a life.”
The beauty queen also advised students not to resort to a permanent solution or to a temporary problem and don’t hesitate to talk to someone, emphasizing that grades and degree are not the “only important thing.”
“This talk is for my UP Law family and other law students struggling with their mental health, as well as for the young people of Roxas City, and anyone who needs it.”
